Professor Paul Iwe Akubue, Professor and Dean of Pharmacology and Toxicology as well as Former Vice-Chancellor of Madonna University, Nigeria. He was also conferred by the University of Nigeria Nsukka the prestigious title of Emeritus Professor.

He is also a member of many Learned Societies and Professional Bodies, including:

-Fellow, Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain.
-Fellow, West African Postgraduate College of Pharmacists.
-West African Society of Pharmacology

-British Pharmacological Society (for many years)

Professor Akubue studied at the University of London, School of Pharmacy (now known as University College London) where he obtained Bachelor of Pharmacy degree. He also studied at King’s College in London, where he earned First Class Honours and Doctor of Philosophy.

His University teaching and research career has spanned over forty years. He started his career at the University of Nigeria, where he was head of both the Department of Pharmacy and the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology for a total period of twelve years. He was the pioneer Dean for the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences. The second University he worked at was Madonna University, Nigeria, where he was the pioneer Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy and Faculty of Health Sciences. He was later appointed the Vice-Chancellor.

Professor Akubue later served as the Coordinator and Director of Research for five years at the International Center of Ethno-medicine and Drug Development. He also spent a year as visiting research scientist at the Environmental Protection Agency in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina.

Over the many years in academia, Professor Akubue has served many international organizations. For 28 years he was a member of the World Health Organization in an Expert Group on International Non-proprietary Names for pharmaceuticals. The group met twice a year in Geneva and was responsible for all the generic names of drugs approved by the World Health Organization. He was also a member of the World Health Organization (WHO) Expert Advisory Panel on Traditional Medicine for 25 years.

For his exceptional work, Professor Akubue has been awarded plenty of awards, including:

The Clavender Bright Parker Award for his contributions to the development and growth of pharmacy in West Africa

The Fellowship award by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain in “recognition for his contributions in the science and profession of pharmacy”

The PharmaNews Award for outstanding contributions to the profession of pharmacy in West Africa
